The gunman only needed to see Sherlock fall. So why tell John he was a fake? Why try to convince him that he’s a liar?   Am I missing something? Is this a stupid question?  Sherlock didn’t go home afterwards because he wanted to guarantee that Moriarty’s network was completely destroyed. There would be no way for him to protect John, Mrs. Hudson, and Lestrade if he didn’t fall and then stay “dead.”  That’s why it takes him so long to come back, too. Because he’s getting rid of Moriarty’s network, and dealing with Moran and such.
